Rumours have surfaced about a PlayStation phone powered by Android

Sony Ericsson could be bringing out a PlayStation and Xperia branded phone powered by Android 3.0, if the rumours are correct.

Sony Ericsson is working on a hybrid mobile phone and gaming device that is a cross between the Samsung Captivate and PSP Go. It is believed to include a landscape slider complete with PSP-like controls, a touchpad in place of the joystick, a 3.7”-4.1” screen, a 5 megapixel camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

March was the first time we heard such rumours about a gaming phone which was supposed to have resulted from the collaboration of Sony’s PlayStation brand and it’s Sony Ericsson phone division. However, we haven’t heard that it would run on Google’s Android OS before.

Engadget’s sources say that the device will run the 3.0 operating system, codename Gingerbread. It will run standard Android apps and will also include a marketplace just for Android-based games, especially ones that use the phone’s PSP-like controls.

Look out for this device to be announced later on this year.

Spotify spreads to Symbian

Well, it seems that Spotify’s increasingly successful mission to take over the world of digital music is gathering pace. Having already taken control of the way that many people listen to music at work and at home, they’re now making a substantial effort to conquer the mobile market.

By releasing its first mobile app for the Symbian platform, following successful iPhone & Android releases in August, Spotify can now be used by millions of Nokia and Sony Ericsson users wherever they are. Even better, the new app lets you use other phone functions whilst playing music, and you can sync playlists from the desktop app. Premium subscribers, who pay £9.99 a month for ad-free streams can access the new service, and whilst lots of people were content to put up with the ads so long as they didn’t have to pay, we’re betting that many more will be tempted by the prospect of mobile streaming…

Samsung & Sony Face Off in the Battle of the Megapixels

The competition to see who can produce the best mobile phone camera continues apace, as both Samsung and Sony Ericsson have announced new models boasting a fairly amazing 12.1 megapixel snapper. This is higher than the vast majority of digital cameras, and although Sony were the first to show off their new baby, Samsung have nipped in with an earlier release that may steal their competitor’s thunder. The Samsung Pixon12 is expected to go on sale in Europe any time from the end of June, whilst the Sony Ericsson Satio will not be available until Q4 2009 at the earliest.

The meteoric rise in camera phone technology and usage has really hurt the camera industry over the last few years, and with these latest models offering even more impressive picture quality, it’s hard to see things changing. Whichever way you look at it, these phones pack a lot into a small package, and now the interesting thing will be to see who wins the latest battle for the megapixel market…
