and the winner is…Samsung

Figures released today in UK shows that sales of Samsung handsets have passed Apple to own more of the market in Q3, which runs from July-September.

Samsung now own 23.8% of the market to Apple’s 14.6% and in third place in Nokia with 14.4%  of the market. In Q3 Samsung sold 27.8 million units compared to Apple’s 17.1 million units.

With all these handsets out Proporta has it covered (literally) with our extensive ranges of cases and accessories for both the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Apple iPhone 4S as well as older models as well.

In the office today we have run a quick questionnaire into which mobile phones each us have, the findings look slightly biased however it’s a great range.

BlackBerry Curve – one
BlackBerry Torch  – one
BlackBerry Bold 2 – one
iPhone 3GS  – one
iPhone 4 – four
iPhone 4S  – One
HTC Desire HD – one
HTC Google Nexus 1 – one
HTC Desire S – one
HTC Wildfire – one
Samsung Galaxy Ace – one
Samsung Google Nexus S – one
Other – two

Pretty interesting don’t you think?

Already in Q4 the battle to be the best selling handset will really hot up, with Christmas round the corner who is going to win….?

If you’re at Glastonbury this weekend or heading off to any other festivals this summer you could find this interesting. Orange have unveiled a t-shirt that can be used to charge smartphones by harnessing the power of sound and it’s being trialed at Glasto. In the future this could mean that you may never be caught short with a flat battery whilst watching your favourite band. Click here to read the article.

Proporta January Round Up

Hello and welcome to what I hope is the first of our monthly industry
updates. I get literally dozens of magazines every month and in these
updates I will be selecting the highlights and interesting tit-bits which
may come in useful.

Next iPad Killer…

If I have seen this term once then, it has appeared in every magazine. The
honest truth seems to be that the iPad still remains king and slayer of all
that come to challenge. The market place is littered with the bloody shells
of discontinued and updated tablets from all sorts of well renowned
manufacturers, and at CES alone this year there were nearly 100 on show. In
every test and review this month the iPad remains triumphant winning Best
Buy in BBC Focus magazine and even managing a five star rating in an
article on the Android Tablets in Stuff magazine, which is quite impressive
when the iPad doesn’t even run the Android operating system.

However, the next serious contender seems to be the Motorola Xoom which won
CNET Best in Show at CES in Las Vegas (Apple was not there by the way).
Being the first tablet with a dual core processor and running the Android
3, Honeycomb operating system, Could this be the one?

Smartphone Round Up

HTC seem to be storming the market. Stuff magazine featured three HTC
models (Desire HD, HD7 and Legend) in their top five Smartphone review. The
number one slot was of course taken by the iPhone 4 which in true Stuff
fashion was described as “Slimmer, sexier and smarter than the rest”
and I would not be surprised if they airbrushed the image and photographed
it on the beach wearing a Bikini.
Other coverage of note focused on the Nokia N8 which seems to have a solid
following and the Blackberry Torch 9800. The one to watch seems to be the
LG Optimus 2X, which is getting some serious reviews, but is not out until
later this year.

Let’s talk Media

Apple continues to dominate with all the iPod models getting wide coverage
and rave reviews. The only outsider of note seems to be Cowon which have
two models gaining coverage, the J3 and the large screened X7. The J3 won a
coveted best buy in Which magazine and many reviewers see the X7 as the
Anti-iPod. As such it could gain significant market share if the hype

Last, but not least the return of the Palm…

Let us not forget the Palm is the bed rock of our company and the device to
which we all owe our jobs. Introducing the Palm Pre 2, there will of course
be the die-hard fans, but this is little more than an accessorised Palm Pre
Plus a sort of pimp my Palm if you will. The operating system is as smooth
as silk, but the hardware features lag behind its competitors. So close,
yet so far. Better luck next time.

Free Navigation Worldwide from Nokia

Nokia caused a bit of a stir last week by announcing its new free navigation service. Unlike the recently unveiled Google service that’s limited to the US, Nokia reckon its version will cover 20 million Smartphones worldwide. It’s offering free turn-by-turn navigation in 74 countries and 46 languages, with Ovi Maps available in 180 countries, and traffic updates on offer in 10. On top of that you can get safety camera warnings and pedestrian only shortcuts in 100 cities around the globe.

All in all, it’s a seriously impressive offer, which will drive another nail into the coffin of the already ailing GPS market. The whole system works offline as well, which is a major bonus, as it should extend battery life and keep the navigation working even in data dead zones (and without the roaming charges). From March this year, all new Nokia GPS enabled Smartphones will come installed with the new Ovi Maps application and pre-loaded country map data, access to location aware Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides and walk and drive navigation at no extra cost. It’s a canny move from Nokia, and looks set to secure them a major share of the location-based service market before the landscape gets too crowded.

Basically, you need never get lost, or buy a map again. It’s quite a thought, and the fact that Nokia have suddenly decided to offer all this for free sets an interesting precedent. How will other providers respond? We’ll just have to wait and see…

Spotify spreads to Symbian

Well, it seems that Spotify’s increasingly successful mission to take over the world of digital music is gathering pace. Having already taken control of the way that many people listen to music at work and at home, they’re now making a substantial effort to conquer the mobile market.

By releasing its first mobile app for the Symbian platform, following successful iPhone & Android releases in August, Spotify can now be used by millions of Nokia and Sony Ericsson users wherever they are. Even better, the new app lets you use other phone functions whilst playing music, and you can sync playlists from the desktop app. Premium subscribers, who pay £9.99 a month for ad-free streams can access the new service, and whilst lots of people were content to put up with the ads so long as they didn’t have to pay, we’re betting that many more will be tempted by the prospect of mobile streaming…
