The Eagle has landed… well 40yrs ago

The Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It launched on July 16th 1969 carrying Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, Jr.

On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.

This mission satisfied President John F Kennedy’s ambition of reaching the moon by the end of the 1960s. He stated during a speech given before a joint session of Congress on May 25th 1961:

“I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.”

It’s even true to say that this mission was planned with some computers that are less complex than some current day calculators. Wow – what an achievement. As you know Proporta are into all things gadgety so find this astonishing and we’re sure you do too.
