iAd… Apple’s “Next big thing?”

Hot on the heels of its latest release the iPad, the marketing machine that is Apple are expected to announce the launch of their mobile advertising platform as soon as tomorrow.

The new ad platform that could well be called the “iAd” has been described as “revolutionary” and “our next big thing” by Apple chief Steve Jobs.

The move into this arena has been hotly anticipated since Apple bought mobile advertising developer Quattro for nearly $300 million back in January after Google snatched AdMob out from under them a few months before that.

Another hint at Apple’s intended progression into advertising was an “App Store Tip” recently published discouraging developers from creating “location-based information primarily to enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on a user’s location”.

Apple is clearly keen to take the monopoly on mobile advertising just as it has with digital music but is likely to be met with fierce opposition by Google who already have a large slice of this lucrative pie.

Precise details of the system and its features are expected to be unveiled on Thursday April 7th.
