BlackBerry 10 – what’s it all about?

The highly anticipated BlackBerry 10 operating system with two new handsets, Z10 and Q10, has officially been launched to the world in a number of international events.

BlackBerry 10

Delayed since October last year, all eyes have been watching RIM (now known as BlackBerry) for more details on BB10 due to Apple and Android’s firm dominance of the smartphone market in recent years. In fact, industry experts are calling it the “moment of truth” for the mobile phone manufacturer.

So what’s BlackBerry 10 all about? Find out in our quick guide below.

Two new handsets
Z10 and Q10 both use the new BB10 operating system.

Z10 Touchscreen
This is the first time that BlackBerry have created a fully touchscreen smartphone and brings them up to speed with the rest of the players out there. The Q10 model sticks to the good old BB QWERTY keyboard.

Intelligent Keyboard
Type more accurately and much faster thanks to a keyboard that adapts to your way of typing.

BlackBerry Balance
This is arguably the USP of BB10 that could give it a chance to carve its niche in an already heavily covered market. Ideal for executives and City types, BlackBerry Balance allows users to be able to switch from their personal phone to a completely business related interface that their workplace has optimised all on the same handset.

Cool points?
Alicia Keys has been brought on board to coincide with the launch of BB10 as BlackBerry’s Creative Director, which is clearly a move to try and get away from their established business image.

When’s it out?
In an unusual move, the new BlackBerry Z10 is available from today, which is before it will be launched in the US and the UAE.

Austin: “Fox Cam…I would love to know what those cute little misters get up to on their fantastic journeys through a starry night…”

Holly: “I would use it at the birth of my next child!”

Diane: “On the teeter-totter ride at the top of the Stratosphere, Las Vegas – then I could re-live the terror from the comfort of my armchair (if I survived, of course!)”

Andi: “I would like to use the camera in outer space to record the moment that a new star is born.”

Meg: “[I’d] attach it to the nearest alien, so I could see the inside of their spaceship and their moonbase on the darkside of the moon”

My life with the Google Nexus 7

Stephanie, from our Marketing Team, shares her experience of the Google Nexus 7 with us all in this quick blog post…

Google Nexus 7

When I was given a Google Nexus 7 tablet for Christmas I was in pure shock. I have to say that my touchscreen skills are not the best so I was a bit scared when I saw this cute 7-inch mini tablet in my hands.

Now I have been using it for nearly four weeks and I have to say that it has changed my life completely, here is why …

Pros:
It fits in most of my handbags and even in some of my coat pockets so it’s very easy to carry around with me. The best thing really is that I can hold it in one hand as it’s so light, much lighter than the Kindle Fire.

Apps can be downloaded within seconds and with Google Maps you have the ability to save offline maps to your device whilst staying connected within the Google cloud.

Oh yes and my nightmare of touchscreen displays was ungrounded as this display is the most responsive one I’ve ever seen or used.

Cons:
I wouldn’t use it as a camera anyway but it only has a front facing camera and the photo quality is not the best. It’s also not the best when writing very long documents or emails, might be better to use a laptop or computer to do that.

Life changing?
Yes! I am using my Google Nexus 7 for nearly everything now: Banking, recipes, BBC iPlayer, eBooks, games, emails, Skype and browsing.  Just unfortunate that I can’t use it as a phone 🙂

If you’re looking for a Google Nexus 7 Case, make sure you check out Proporta for a good selection.

Facebook announcement rumours – what could it be?

Today’s Facebook announcement (due at 6pm UK time) has sent the rumour mill into overdrive for the last few days with speculation as to what the social network will be launching at their press event on 15th January 2013.

Facebook announcement

There has been talk since last year about the possibility of a Facebook smartphone coming out to join the already crowded race in mobile phone land. But what else could it be? Journalists were asked to “come and see what we’re building”.

We run down the Facebook announcement rumours pre-launch to help you get in the mood for the big reveal later on.

Facebook Smartphone
Although Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, has hinted that a Facebook smartphone was not on the cards last year, a lot can change in just a few months in the Internet world. One thing’s for sure, Proporta will certainly be eager to provide you with a Facebook phone case if this is in fact what they’re launching.

New News Feed
Speculators think that Facebook could well want to expand the news feed into a hub for worldwide information, rather than just being about the people you’re friends with.

Charged Messages
Facebook told the world last year that they were thinking about implementing a $1 charge for every private message sent to non-friends, so could this be the announcement?

Facebook as the New Search Engine
Could the world’s biggest social network also become a search engine?

What do you think the Facebook announcement will be? Let us know in the comments section below.

CES 2013 – Bendy smartphones, smartglasses, and a finger mouse

CES 2013 is starting to wind down for another year, but not without revealing even more wondrously astounding tech products that seem like they belong in a sci-fi movie. Have a quick look at the latest innovations on display at the Consumer Electronics Show, and if you make it to the bottom, you’ll see a couple of Proportians rubbing shoulders with a certain pint-sized Hollywood legend.

Flexible Samsung phone
There’s been talk of bendy smartphones for a while now, but they’re getting even closer to becoming a reality now as Samsung have made no secret of this new technology at CES 2013. Demonstrating a working flexible Samsung phone to the world at the conference this week, this OLED display technology is destined for a whole range of Youm branded devices coming soon.

Smartglasses
We could all soon pretend to be The Terminator (without all the killing obviously) thanks to this latest contraption on show at CES 2013. Smartglasses are another sci-fi fantasy that are edging closer to our faces, with Vuzix launching the M100 smart-specs which sync with smartphones and tablets to display texts, photos and other notifications in front of your eye.

Genius Ring wearable mouse
Attaching to your finger, the Genius Ring is a compact mouse device that works with your computer and also doubles up as a presentation aid thanks to its useful laser.

Pebble Smartwatch
Shipping to customers in the next couple of weeks, the Pebble Smartwatch links with smartphones and uses e-paper technology to display all incoming notifications.

Lynnette and Max schmoozing with Hollywood royalty
The other big news from CES has been Proporta’s Lynnette and Max hanging out with Danny DeVito, making us here in the office a tiny bit jealous.
